CONTEMPLATING IMMORTALITY IN THIS HEAT WAVE
Wood Storks, Reflecting on This Day Where They Normally Hunt Stress Free
They may also be contemplating their immortality as an alligator arrogantly cruises, just a little too close.
It wasn't long ago that this species of storks was declining in numbers because their habitats were dwindling due to development. Now, increasing in numbers in SC, little did they know developers weren't their only enemies. Even the relentless heat wave in the country now pales in comparison.
Wood Storks also have very rigid requirements for raising their young, passed down from generations so imprinted in their DNA. They insist on being near water, preferring to make their nests directly over water. If a draught happens or water dries up or they determine conditions aren't just perfect for raising their young they will abandon eggs, nests, even young chicks so it's no wonder their species has such a hard time surviving. This was a good day however as I observed both young chicks and their parents hunting contentedly together in the marsh. Cruising alligators excluded of course.
We are experiencing unprecedented temperatures in the current grueling heat wave, and we are still to discover what the last few weeks of extraordinarily high temperatures will cause in terms of major changes especially in our oceans and rivers. What our dedicated nature photographers have recorded could be our last view of things we've taken for granted for decades or even centuries.
Nature is a little harder to enjoy this Summer so far, and I have adorned my walls with my favorite nature scenes and am even more grateful I can at least enjoy my past photos of wildlife in the comfort of my ac inside. That said, September is right around the corner and there's no time like the present to plan excursions and make reservations to relax and celebrate the end of what may go on record as the most grueling summer ever. Don't forget your camera and binoculars and that our state and our national parks are the perfect places to unwind and engross oneself in both the excitement and the serenity of nature to enjoy it to the fullest.
Studying how to preserve our environment for future generations and photographing it will always be at the top of my list when planning my day, especially now.
Make everyday count. It's never too soon or too late to make plans to squeeze in at least one thing that makes you smile every day.
Happy trails, y'all.
